BACKGROUND
Kurt Wagner entered the German foster system when he was abandoned as an infant. Having visible mutations from birth, there was little to no chance of Kurt being adopted. The concept of "mutants" was relatively new at this time, and Kurt was a shocking example. He was moved from facility to facility, home to home, being frequently relocated because everywhere he went he became a subject of curiosity and mistreatment.
There was an incident where local teens ganged up on him at 10 years old and trapped him in a room so they could charge people money to look at him. It was broken up after a few days, but after that Kurt largely hid away and refused to attend regular school even when people tried to force him. He spent his time in the local Catholic church, where the priest and a couple of nuns were exceptionally kind to him.
His most stable situation was when he was placed with Margali Szardos, a Romani woman and her two children, Stephan and Jimaine. Kurt once again became a strange oddity in the area, only cautiously tolerated. People still came from nearby towns to see if it was true, that there was a demonic boy living there. There were attacks, unwelcome photos, and online posts about his existence like he was a cryptid.
Stephan loathed Kurt, while Kurt and Jimaine struck up a delicate friendship. Kurt cautiously re-entered school and was a talented gymnast and athlete alongside Jimaine. Stephan and his friends bullied Kurt, but Kurt started to adjust to school anyway. He learned that he could win people over with his charm and personality.
One afternoon the three of them were playing on a railroad bridge, and roughhousing between Jimaine and Stephan caused the siblings to fall. Kurt's teleportation powers awoke and he narrowly saved Jimaine from falling to her death. Stephan, however, died. The town was horrified, and blamed Kurt while Jimaine was hospitalized. They were certain he had somehow caused the accident.
Charles Xavier arrived in time to diffuse the situation just as public opinion was turning dangerously against Kurt. He took Kurt to America at 13 and became his legal guardian when the boy was 14.

FAMILY
CHARLES XAVIER : Legal adoptive guardian. Charles found Kurt when he was 13 and adopted him at 14 as the first student of Xavier's academy. The steadiest presence in his life. Their relationship is close, but Kurt was sometimes rebellious. Kurt always felt like it was a step too far to call him "father". Now that Charles is in a coma, he regrets never saying it aloud even though Charles probably knew.

He impressed upon Kurt that he should never feel ashamed, and focus on helping other mutants who can't hide. Their relationship since then has been complicated, but Kurt has been in regular contact with him since Genosha, with it ramping up after he was rescued from the Brimstone Dimension.

Kurt is discovered by Charles Xavier, who intercedes when Kurt is being accused of homicide after the death of his foster brother. He's brought to America while Xavier is working on official adoption paperwork. Kurt meets Erik Lehnsherr, who speaks to him in German while Kurt is still learning English. He emphasizes to Kurt that he should never be ashamed of his appearance.
2012 (14)
Xavier is now Kurt's legal guardian, but Xavier and Erik have their falling out. Kurt is unhappy, but he's ultimately Charles' kid through and through. He becomes the first student of the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters.
2013 (15)
Still a devout Catholic, Kurt has special disdain for Stryker. He's found a local church that accepts him, but there's still anxiety and rejection around every corner.
2014 (16)
Shocked by what "Uncle" Erik has become. Agrees with the spirit of his sentiment, but is upset by the execution. Xavier talks him through it, which includes some arguments with his emotional teenage ward.
2015 (17)
Dancin' in the Dark — Kurt is kidnapped out of his hotel room by the Morlocks, specifically because Callisto has become infatuated with him. She wants to marry him and keep him with the Morlocks. Luckily he's rescued by Emma, Evie, Bobby and Manny.
Emma defeats Callisto one-on-one, and Kurt develops an obvious crush on her.

Kurt as Nightcrawler is officially named as the leader of the X-Men, a role he accepts enthusiastically.
Jack O'Diamonds — The team go to solve a series of robberies, and come back with a new member, Scott Summers. Scott and Kurt bond as adoptive brothers over the following years.

ABILITIES
"DEMONIC" APPEARANCE
Kurt's mutation has left him with a very distinct appearance. He's covered entirely in a thin layer of dark blue fur that feels a little like velvet to the touch. He has three digits on each of his hands, and two toes on his elongated feet. Pointed ears, glowing yellow eyes, fanged teeth and a long spaded tail complete the otherworldly look. His height of 5'9" can be variable, depending on if he's standing up straight, and whether he's walking on his "toes" or with his whole foot flat on the ground. He moves in a slightly inhuman way as well, either gracefully posed like an old Hollywood lead, or crouched like a cat.
TELEPORTATION
Kurt can instantaneously teleport himself and a limited amount of additional mass instantaneously within about a three mile radius. He must be able to see the location, or be at least moderately familiar with it, otherwise he risks teleporting into solid objects. He has passive spatial awareness to help with this, but it wouldn't save him from teleporting into a wall. The speed of his teleportation is easier to push than the distance.
When he teleports he moves through the Brimstone Dimension, makes a distinct BAMF noise as air is rapidly replaced. His comings and goings leave behind a cloud of purple-blue smoke that smells of sulfur.

PREHENSILE TAIL
Kurt's tail is as dexterous as his hands, and can manipulate most objects nearly as well. It's strong enough to support his weight and deal serious blows to enemies. He sometimes uses it to get around, hanging upside down from it. Unless you are close to him, he finds people touching his tail to be invasive. The X-Men all have free reign to grab him by it even if he complains.
WALL-CLINGING
Kurt can stick to vertical walls and sort of crawl around on them, but it's not the strongest grip. He'd rather teleport from wall to wall than risk being knocked off.
NIGHTVISION & SHADOWY CAMOUFLAGE
Kurt can see perfectly well in the dark, and always seems to be standing in shadows even when under direct light. When it's dark, his edges sort of blur and he's hard to spot unless you're specifically looking for him (or catch those eyes).
SUPERHUMAN AGILITY & FLEXIBILITY
Extremely flexible with incredible reflexes that make his fighting style fast and unpredictable.
SKILLS
EXPERT SWORDSMAN
When Kurt first arrived at the institute, he was already fascinated by pirates, swashbuckling and swords. Charles decided to indulge him and got him lessons in fencing. This has snowballed into Kurt becoming a formidable swordsman who likes to fight with three blades — the third being held by his tail, naturally. Kurt typically doesn't like being lethal in fights, but when he does it's effective. The addition of his teleportation and acrobatics makes him a challenging opponent, even though Kurt is not significantly more durable than a standard human.
ACROBAT
In no small part thanks to his mutations, Kurt is an Olympic level gymnast and effortless acrobat. It's as easy as walking for him, and he often shows off unnecessarily.
HAND-TO-HAND-TO-TAIL COMBAT
Even unarmed, Kurt is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter and once again makes use of his teleportation and tail. He's fast and tricky to make contact with.
MULTILINGUAL
German, English, Spanish, French. Semi-fluent in Japanese, still studying it. Any telepaths who read his thoughts will discover he thinks almost entirely in very fast German.
PILOT
He's not first in line to pilot the jet, but he does know how to do it safely. He was just never as excited about it as other students.
MEDIA SAVVY
Kurt is the unlikely face of the X-Men, and he's had no choice but to learn how to interact with the public. His appearance is divisive, but his wit and charm during interviews and at public appearances has won him a lot of good will. He's popular on social media, gets invites to red carpet events, and has dated at least one high profile celebrity. He keeps calm, composed and kind in front of the camera.
